Can you be completely cured of TB?

With treatment, TB can almost always be cured . A course of antibiotics will usually need to be taken for 6 months. Several different antibiotics are used because some forms of TB are resistant to certain antibiotics.

After taking TB medicine for several weeks, a doctor will be able to tell TB patients when they are no longer able to spread TB germs to others. Most people with TB disease will need to take TB medicine for at least 6 months to be cured .

Your treatment will depend on your infection . If you have latent TB, your doctor will give you medication to kill the bacteria so the infection doesn't become active. You might get isoniazid, rifapentine, or rifampin, either alone or combined. You'll have to take the drugs for up to 9 months.

Is TB a lifelong disease?

People infected with TB bacteria have a lifetime risk of falling ill with TB of 10% . However persons with compromised immune systems, such as people living with HIV, malnutrition or diabetes, or people who use tobacco, have a much higher risk of falling ill.Jan 18, 2018
